Could you tell me about yourself?
My name is Curt Gear. I am the President of Five Star Specialty Products. We are the North American master distributor for NSD Corporation.
I have worked in the steel industry for more than 30 years and have had the opportunity to participate in projects across North America. Over the course of my career, I’ve worked in a wide range of steelmaking and processing environments.
My experience includes projects in hot rolling mills, cold rolling mills, continuous casters, electric arc furnaces (EAFs), blast furnaces, galvanizing lines, and plate mills. Each of these operations presents unique technical challenges and working across them has given me a comprehensive understanding of how steel plants operate from primary steelmaking through finishing.
That exposure has helped me understand the real operational challenges mills face—particularly when it comes to uptime, maintenance, reliability, and safety.
Could you briefly introduce your company and its core business?

Five Star Specialty Products specializes in providing advanced sensing solutions for heavy industrial environments, particularly within the steel industry. Our company serves as the Master Distributor in North America for NSD Corporation, a global leader in the design and manufacture of rugged position sensors built for extremely harsh operating conditions.
NSD’s sensors are engineered specifically for industries such as steel production where equipment is exposed to intense heat, vibration, water, dust, and heavy mechanical stress. Their technology provides accurate and reliable position feedback even in environments where conventional sensors often fail.
At Five Star Specialty Products, our focus is on helping customers improve operational reliability, increase equipment uptime, and reduce maintenance costs by implementing sensing technologies that are proven to perform in demanding industrial applications. By combining our decades of steel industry experience with the advanced engineering of NSD products, we work closely with customers across North America to deliver solutions that enhance productivity, safety, and long-term performance.

Can you share your long-term vision for NSD business in North America?

The North American steel industry is continuing to expand, with many companies investing in new equipment, modernizing existing facilities, and increasing production capacity.
As these investments continue, the need for reliable industrial sensing technologies becomes even more important. Many of the global leaders in engineering and mill construction are increasingly relying on technology from NSD Corporation because of its proven reliability in harsh environments.
My long-term vision is to continue expanding our presence in the market by working closely with steel producers, engineering firms, and mill builders to provide sensing solutions that improve reliability, reduce downtime, and support safer operations.
With more than 30 years of experience working directly in steel mills—from furnaces and casting operations to rolling and finishing lines—I understand the challenges that plants face every day.
By combining that experience with the advanced technology developed by NSD, we are well positioned to support the continued growth and modernization of the North American steel industry.

What are the most important factors USA customers consider when selecting sensors, and how is your company addressing those expectations?

In steel production, reliability is always the top priority. Mills operate continuously, and any equipment failure can quickly translate into lost production and costly downtime.
Customers also evaluate long-term cost effectiveness. While purchase price is always a factor, plant engineers are increasingly focused on solutions that reduce maintenance requirements and extend equipment life.
Another major factor is safety. Reliable position sensing is critical for controlling heavy equipment, automated processes, and moving machinery safely.
By addressing these priorities—reliability, lifecycle cost, and safety—NSD sensors provide significant value to steel producers.

How do you assess the future potential of NSD sensors in the USA steel industry?

The future potential for NSD sensors in the U.S. steel industry is very strong. The industry is currently undergoing a period of major investment, modernization, and expansion, which is creating increasing demand for reliable industrial sensing technology.
Across the United States, steel producers are investing billions of dollars to upgrade mills, expand production capacity, and implement more advanced manufacturing technologies. For example, U.S. Steel and its partners have announced plans to invest roughly $11 billion in modernization projects, including new rolling mills, furnace upgrades, and other large capital improvements.
At the same time, the industry is shifting toward more advanced and efficient production methods such as electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. EAF facilities already account for the majority of U.S. steel production and are expected to represent around 80–85% of total U.S. steelmaking capacity, reflecting a long-term trend toward modern, automated operations.
As mills become more automated and production speeds increase, accurate and dependable position sensing becomes increasingly critical. Many of the systems that control rolling mills, casters, furnaces, and finishing lines rely heavily on precise position feedback to maintain product quality, equipment safety, and operational efficiency.
This is where technologies from NSD Corporation have significant value. NSD sensors are specifically engineered to operate in harsh environments involving heat, vibration, water, and heavy mechanical loads. Their non-contact measurement technology and rugged design allow them to perform reliably in applications such as roll gap measurement, actuator position feedback, and equipment positioning in steel plants.
As steel producers continue investing in modernization, automation, and higher productivity, the demand for sensors that can operate reliably in these extreme environments will only increase. For that reason, I believe NSD technology is very well positioned to play an important role in supporting the continued growth and modernization of the U.S. steel industry.

Could you tell me about yourself?
My Name is Eric Bergman. I am the Vice President at Five Star Specialty Products, the North American Agents for NSD products. Before joining Five Star, I spent 29 years in the Steel Industry. My focus was on Safety, Equipment Reliability, Troubleshooting, and Supporting Operations. That experience gave me a strong understanding of the challenges mills face and how critical it is to have dependable equipment with the support in keeping the plants operational and producing a quality product.
Based on your engineering background, how do you access the technical strengths of NSD sensors?

Based on my background working in steel mills, maintaining high safety standards, minimizing downtime, and improving equipment reliability were always top priorities. In heavy industrial environments where equipment failures are costly and time-consuming to repair, reliability becomes critical because unplanned downtime directly impacts safety, production, and maintenance costs. I evaluate the technical strengths of NSD sensors by how well they performed in these demanding conditions. NSD products provide durable, dependable sensing solutions designed to operate in harsh environments where heat, vibration, moisture, and contamination are common challenges. Their robust construction and proven reliability help operations maintain uptime while reducing maintenance requirements and operational risk.

What defines your company in today's competitive steel industry?

What defines our company in today’s competitive steel industry is our ability to provide performance that solves specific operational problems. Our solutions help improve uptime and throughput in measurable ways. In this industry, reliability is often more valuable than the component itself, because the cost of failure is far greater than the cost of the part. That’s where our value comes in. We support our customers with strong application engineering, customized solutions when needed, and knowledgeable people who understand the steelmaking process and the challenges our customers face.

What role does after-sales service, and technical support play in this market?

In today’s steel market, after-sales service and technical support are not secondary benefits, they are critical components of product value. Fast response, application expertise, and proactive support directly reduce operational risk and strengthen long-term customer relationships.

Where do you see your company positioned in the USA market five years from now?

In five years, NSD will be recognized across U.S. heavy industry as a leader in absolute position sensing, trusted for reliability in the most demanding environments.
By expanding our presence with OEMs and end users, NSD will be the go-to solution for critical motion feedback applications where uptime, safety, and reliability are essential.
